Barn Cat Program

Did you know that in Australia, cats face some serious challenges? They have the highest death rate, the highest risk of abandonment, and are the most commonly surrendered animals in need of rescue. Often, it’s not just about poor treatment; life circumstances can change for their owners—moving, health issues, or even passing away—leading to these beloved pets being left behind.

Discover Our Barn Cat Program: A Unique Solution for Your Property

Are you looking for a natural way to control rodents on your property? Our Barn Cat Program might be just what you need! We rescue cats from pounds and wild colonies, giving these wild-hearted felines a second chance at life. After receiving essential veterinary care—such as desexing, vaccinations, and microchipping—we pair them with properties that can provide shelter and sustenance.

While these cats may not become lap companions, they thrive in environments like sheds, garages, or workshops, where they can find comfort and safety. Their mission? To keep your space free of unwanted pests! You’ll discover that this symbiotic relationship benefits both you and the cats; they enjoy reliable food and shelter, while you benefit from a reduction in vermin.

At Soquilichi, we believe every cat deserves a chance, regardless of temperament. Many shelters focus solely on friendly animals, leaving countless deserving cats without a home. We welcome all cats, knowing that with the right environment, even the shyest cats can become friendly over time.

If you’re ready to welcome a hardworking barn cat into your life, Soquilichi Rescue Ranch is here to help! Together, we can create a nurturing space for these resilient cats while effectively managing pest control—a wonderful win-win for everyone involved.

Why We Prefer the Term "Wild"

You may have heard the term ‘feral’ used to describe wild cats. We prefer to avoid that label because we believe all animals deserve a chance to live. Stop and think about it: a scared, traumatized, or terrorized animal isn’t likely to approach you for a belly rub. They’ve lost trust, and it takes time to rebuild that connection.

That’s why we use the term “wild.” Instead of writing these cats off as unsalvageable, we add in some vital ingredients: time, patience, and love. It takes 100% commitment to rehabilitate our rescues, and we’re serious about helping cats find their forever homes.

Rehab Times Differ

You probably could guess that a domesticated lap cat is the takes the least to rehabilitate and is the fastest to rehome. Barn cats, on the other hand, can naturally be more skittish and less trusting, and probably more traumatised. These animals can take 6 months.
